Powder Puff Football and Charlie Munger

Football is big in Ohio.  Lots of traditions revolve around football: tail-gating, homecoming parades, pep rallies, and Powder Puff Football.  For those who did not have the pleasure of enjoying this great classic of american life, Powder Puff Football is an all girl flag-football game, typically between the Senior and Junior classes.  The guys gladly take the opportunity to coach and you get a few days to practice the week before the game.  Being an avid Sportscenter fan back in the day, I had recently seen a few trick plays in Sportscenter’s weekly Top 10.  We copied three plays from Sportscenter and that’s all we practiced, three plays. Getting in the end-zone in powder-puff isn’t that common, so we figured if one worked that would be great.  We decided not to practice anything else.  When game time arrived, our first three plays on offense consisted of three consecutive touchdowns, one from each trick play.  It was a humorous and successful result, but after those three plays, we didn’t have anything else to do.  In the end, it didn’t matter as we won 21-7, or something along those lines.

Charlie Munger could have been are offensive coordinator, “People underrate the importance of a few simple big ideas – the chief lesson is that a few big ideas really work.”  (Munger)

In investing, they don’t have to be trick plays, but you only need a few good ideas each year.  I feel sorry for journalists at Barron’s or any other publication who have to write about ideas on a weekly or  basis.  Not a snowball chance…that you can come up with 52 good ideas each year.  You need to decide if you are an investor or a journalist.  If you are an investor, you only need a handful of good ideas per year.

If you are interested, this was one of the trick plays.
